There’s a little known secret in natural therapeutics — the profound healing pain relief of Helichrysum italicum essential oil. Its action is nothing short of amazing, though this information is rarely offered directly by aromatherapy companies due to advertising restrictions. Throughout the medical aromatherapy texts however, this fantastic oil is lauded for its broad range of healing effects on the body’s tissues. Here’s a quick primer on using this oil for yourself and your loved ones.

The essential oil steam distilled from the little yellow flowers of the Helichrysum plant (the oil is also known as ‘Everlasting’ and ‘Immortelle’) is in a class by itself for the three most important factors for a medicine: safety, efficacy and ease-of-use. Some essential oils used for pain must be used with caution; those containing methyl salicilate should be used sparingly due to their toxicity potential. Helichrysum however, has no such restrictions in the aromatherapy literature. It is in fact, one of the few essential oils recommended for direct application to the skin in the most critical or immediate cases.

In terms of efficacy, a great many trained natural therapists have found the oil to be the most profoundly pain relieving of any topical medicine available today. Back ache? Joint pain? Sports injury? Pain due to surgery or other trauma? All these ailments and more can be treated effectively with a preparation of Helichrysum essential oil in the vegetable or nut oil of your choice. Users call it a ‘magic oil’, and claim the pain relief is ‘amazing’. Apricot Kernel oil is commonly used, as it has anti-inflammation properties itself; Rosehip seed and Tamanu oils are used when treating skin damage; Jojoba is a wonderful all-purpose stand-by, good for any application.

Mixing your own topical preparation is very simple: just mix one part Helichrysum to nine parts ‘carrier oil’ in a separate bottle. This makes a 10% concentration. Some users create formulas as strong as 20% Helichrysum, others with as little as 5%. Using the lowest concentration necessary is more a question of cost than anything else — the pure essential oil is relatively costly, particularly the highest quality, rarest varieties. The pure essential oil applied ‘neat’ or undiluted is called for when a trauma has just occurred. For example, if one has just twisted an ankle, or really any serious injury where bruising will occur, several drops of the essential oil should be applied immediately and then again every hour or so until the potential for hematoma is eliminated.

Beyond simple pain relief, Helichrysum is known to actually speed the healing of injuries through its antioxidant, anti-inflammation and regenerative actions. This is helpful for not only ‘common’ bumps and bruises, but for surgical sutures and burns as well. Further, the oil is found in 3-5 percent concentrations in skin care recipes to reduce the appearance of skin aging, and to reduce and eliminate scars of all kinds.

The finest of Helichrysum essential oil varieties is considered to be that distilled from plants grown on the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. The climatic conditions and plant genetics result in a unique natural chemical composition of the essential oil with strong anti-inflammate, analgesic and regenerative actions. This oil may be listed as Helicrysum italicum sub-species serotinum. You may find that other varieties work as well for your needs, and can experiment as you see fit.

Helichrysum essential oil is one of nature’s most profound healers. It works for a great many symptoms of pain, safely and effectively. It is simple to use and readily available through internet sources (it is, as of yet, difficult to find in local health food stores, though this may be changing soon). Whatever your needs for this type of therapy, Helichrysum italicum essential oil is worth investigating.

The use of various scents to provide relief to mental and physical ailments is Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has many benefits and has been enforced by both spiritualists and scientists. Within this article, we will entail the many benefits of using incense in aromatherapy to provide the means for achieving relief.

While many people implement the use of aromatherapy by applying and/or inhaling certain fragrances, it has been found that the use of incense can be just as effective. If you decide to implement the use of incense, it should be noted that you use the proper precautions to ensure that you and your surroundings are kept safe. You should use the proper incense burning tools, and never leave the incense unattended.

The following list includes several different types of incense that are used in aromatherapy. This list, while short, will give you a good idea of how specific types of incense have a function in aromatherapy. If you have a question regarding a specific incense, then feel free to consult Mr. Google or your local library.

1) The first incense to discuss is called Dragon’s Blood incense. This incense has been used for numerous things in aromatherapy such as the relief of diarrhea, reduced fevers, alleviate the effects of stomach viruses and assisting with the pain of ulcers.

2) Another incense that is quite popular is the Sandalwood incense. This has been shown to help mitigate stress and bring a person closer to their spiritual awareness.

3) Lavender is an incense known to help calm and soothe people. This might be a great way to end a work day.

4) Amber incense is a great scent for balancing the body’s various systems.

5) Indian Cedar incense has been shown to help with depression and other mood disorders.

6) The Jasmine incense helps to balance all hormones and stimulates sexual activity. This scent effects both women and men and serves as a great way to set the mood for special moments.

7) Patchouli incense has been found to help soothe the nerves in the body. It has also been found to make the nerves stronger.

Rose incense helps to promote balance with your spiritual side. It has also been noted to assist in meditation and focusing one’s attention.

Do you agree Aromatherapy has suffered from it’s New Age stigma long enough? It’s time to tell the masses what these little bottles of liquid jewels are all about! Here in the United States, common use of the term ‘aromatherapy’ has been skewed so much that only that ‘touchy-feely’ aspect of ‘feeling good from smelling something nice’ is it’s complete definition to most folks. If you happen to know better, this article may just be a refresher in the science of therapeutic essential oil usage, but one that may help you teach others the ‘why’ of ‘medical aromatherapy’ - if this concept is new, however, read on and learn - this may be important to you someday!

We’ve always been attracted to pleasant smells - body perfumes have been used for millennia, as have incense and scented balms in religious and ritual ceremony. Plants have been used medicinally throughout history as well. Therapeutic use of distilled aromatic compounds of plants only ‘officially’ began in 1937 with the writing of Rene Maurice Gattefosse’s ‘Aromatherapie’ - a treatise on the physiological effects of essential oils published by the scientist after his accidental discovery of the healing properties of Lavender oil. Medical aromatherapy practice continues strongly in Europe today - in France, one can be prescribed an essential oil blend by a doctor, and have it filled as we have pharmaceutical prescriptions prepared here. These are not prescriptions for simple aromatic use; as the practice of Aromatherapy includes the entire branch of botanical medicine using volatile aromatic plant compounds, these prescriptions utilize other broad-ranging physiologic effects of essential oils. These include noted antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory and immune supportive effects of many oils, just to name a few.

Effects of essential oils on the psyche, along with some biologic effects through the olfactory system, are an important aspect of their use; this should certainly not be discounted relative to the direct effects on the physiology. Many scientifically designed studies have confirmed the effects of aromatic oils on the mind and emotions. Your smell sense is the only one of the five senses directly connected to the brain - all other senses are routed first through the thalamus, then directed to the cerebral cortex and other brain regions. Each ’scent-sensing’ cell is a sort of chemical receiver - every receptor in the nose reacts to some scents and not others. Each of these scent-cells is directly linked to the brain by one nerve fiber. It is difficult to sense an aroma and ‘think’ about it before having a response - the signal does not travel first to the thought centers. Because each sensing cell is in direct contact with the chemical being sensed, and the cell is in directly wired to the brain, the nervous system’s response to smell is quick and powerful.

The olfactory sense is closely tied to the limbic system, which is the center of emotions, plays a significant part in the formation of memories, and affects our sexual responses. The olfactory region also connects to the hypothalamus, which in-turn controls the entire hormonal system through it’s influence of the pituitary gland. One can easily imagine an olfactory sense receptor being stimulated by the mist of an essential oil resulting in downstream stimulation of the brain in a certain way - stimulating, sedating, relaxing, or otherwise - depending on the molecular form of the oil.

Though we shouldn’t get distracted by the wonderful possibilities of aromas! The physiologic effects of essential oils are far more extensive than if used through the smell sense alone. Medical aromatherapy includes topical application, oral ingestion and natural suppository use of aromatic oils as well. Due to their molecular shapes and sizes, essential oils are remarkably compatible with human physiology. They are easily absorbed and well tolerated, for the most part, in small amounts. Essential oils are not cure-alls however, or placebo-effect-inducing nice smells - they are potent plant medicines, each with significantly different actions. Oregano oil is one of the most broad spectrum antimicrobials known; at the same time, it takes knowledge and skill to employ it properly as it is a strong skin irritant. Melissa oil has been hailed as a cure for Herpes Simplex virus infections by German researchers. Ginger oil has brought relief to sufferer’s of motion sickness, rheumatoid arthritis and intestinal parasites - but not to those with the Herpes virus. The list goes on; the take-home message is that oils CAN be effective if used properly, and improper use can not only be ineffective but even dangerous. That doesn’t mean essential oils are something to be afraid of - they deserve the respect given to any powerful medicine. Consult a qualified professional for ANY serious condition, and consider using essential oils if and when appropriate.

Broad acceptance of true ‘medical aromatherapy’ is a ways-off in the US. There is a lack of knowledge within the established medical community, and qualified aromatherapists are fairly rare, as of yet. With the growing body of evidence validating the efficacy of natural medicines, however, and the failing confidence in our allopathic medical institutions, it may not be long until essential oils find their rightful place in our medicine chests. In the meantime, be cautious, have fun, and do stop and smell the roses, and lavenders, patchoulis, sandalwoods, and all the other great aromatherapies available to you!

Even if you are new to the world of using herbs and essential oils for non-culinary purposes, as soon as you begin, you will be doing your body and your home a world of good.

by Jim Miller

Even if you are new to the world of using herbs and essential oils for non-culinary purposes, as soon as you begin, you will be doing your body and your home a world of good.

Well, if you are the least bit curious, read on! Herbs and essential oils have untold health benefits-for both physical and mental well-being. You can derive their benefits in many different ways, and here are just a few:

-In addition to adding extra flavor in recipes, herbs and food-grade essential oils can stimulate your immune system

-Make healthful herbal teas (more correctly called tisanes, as they don’t contain actual tea plant leaves) that can calm your digestive system, or help detoxify your system

-You can avoid chemicals that cause toxicity in the body by using therapeutic-grade essential oils as an ingredient in your own household cleaning supplies and home-made cold and pain remedies

If you think this is new-age hocus pocus, you’re wrong! The use of herbs and essential oils has been ongoing from the beginning of civilization. They have been vital to the preservation of food, among other things. Think of things that are mentioned in the Bible-frankincense, myrrh, bitter herbs-these natural things had a purpose then, and continue to be useful today. Pliny, a soldier of ancient Rome, wrote a Natural History, which references the use of many plants. He lived in the first century. Much of his knowledge is attributed to the research and writings of Mithridates of Eupator (120-66BC). So plants and their chemical properties have been important since the dawn of time.

Fast forward to today: modern medicine would not be the same if scientists never studied plants and their properties. A great example of this is heart medicine. The common garden perennial, foxglove, is used to make pills for people with heart problems. The plant itself is poisonous, but ironically, it is made into life-saving medicines.

The advantage we have in modern society is that we have perfected agricultural methods, and ways of extracting the best out of the herbs and flowers that give us essential oils. We have been able to achieve purer, more potent, and more consistent results. Therapeutic oils are an example of this great scientific achievement.

These oils are not what you walk into the health food store and find, you really have to seek out those that are labeled “therapeutic grade.” They are extracted with the best methods available, and are more potent and effective than the every day store-bought variety. You cannot expect the same results if you purchase inferior oils.

It is not too late. You can start on your journey to better health. Begin by including herbs and therapeutic grade essential oils to the routine for you and your family. You will probably begin to see increased energy, less sickness, and maybe chronic health challenges will go away. History does repeat itself. In this case, thousands of years of history with herbs and essential oils can’t be wrong.

Aromatherapy is still not clearly understood, in terms of what it is and how it helps promote health and well-being. Aromatherapy means using essential oils extracted from plants and herbs to harmonize and give balance to your body, mind and spirit.

Aromatherapy is not only used when someone is ill. It can be enjoyed anytime because of the soothing and relaxing properties it holds. We all know that a healthy mind creates a healthier body.

How is Aromatherapy Used?

It may surprise you to learn all the areas aromatherapy has been successfully used. The oils have an affect on your central nervous system and depending on the oils used, can relieve anxiety and depression, calm and relax you, even to the point of helping you fall asleep. Other oils are uplifting and stimulate you. There are no adverse effects with aromatherapy, it’s inexpensive, and you can use it anytime of the day or night.

It is also used as a pain reliever during childbirth. Women nowadays prefer to experience the entry of their child into the world and don’t want the traditional methods used in most hospitals. Women have also been using aromatherapy to relieve menstrual cramps and those going through menopause.

When you combine aromatherapy and massage, you can achieve greater results, with increase levels of relaxation and significant improvements in your well being. This is because the oils used are absorbed through the skin as well as through the nose.

Some Common Oils and Their Uses

You can do your own aromatherapy with the purchase of the oils and a burner, or you can add oils to your bath for a truly uplifting or calming experience, depending on the oils you choose. If you use a burner, you should know that the oil must be diluted in water before adding to the burner. Generally only about three or four drops of oil needs to added to about 10 drops of water.

Lavender is a commonly used oil with a variety of applications. It serves to calm you and also has antibacterial properties which help skin heal after being burned. The relaxing power of lavender is helpful at bedtime to allow you to fall asleep. It also relieves headaches.

When mixed with peppermint, another widely used essential oil, you can overcome lethargic moods or fatigue. Peppermint will stimulate you, and improve your mental clarity, your mood, and your memory.

Peppermint, and other similar oils like ginger, juniper, rosemary, clove, and eucalyptus decrease congestion, while jasmine and rose will relieve you of stress. Citrus oils help you uplift your spirit.

For women, sage and geranium are very effective in curing hormonal imbalance. For those going through menopause, they can combine the two, along with lavender, chamomile, Melissa, bergamot, or ylang ylang.

Pregnancy is an amazing experience. Feeling a new life growing inside, kicking at you and responding to your actions is a truly unique experience. You really gain a new appreciation for the abilities of the human body as your stomach stretches beyond anything you had ever imagined to accommodate a new baby. However, there are definite downsides to being pregnant and one of them is the side effect of all that stretching . . . stretch marks.

What Causes Stretch Marks

Stretch Marks occur when the skin is stretched beyond its elasticity. The upper layer stretches and the lower layer of skin tends to tear, causing small rips in the tissue. This results in some rather ugly red marks that feel different from the regular texture of your skin. These will fade to white after your pregnancy, but this can take time and they never really do go away..

Whether or not you will get stretch marks really depends on genetics, the elasticity of your skin and how big you get during the pregnancy. Some women dont grow much at all and have more than sufficient elasticity in their skin to withstand the stretching and remain completely unmarked.

Preventing Stretch Marks

The best way to get rid of sStretch marks is not to get them at all. While 90% of women have the genetic predisposition to stretch marks in pregnancy, that doesnt mean you have to just sit back and let them happen. Prevention is truly the best medicine when it comes to these nasty lines. They may be a banner of your ability to carry a child, but really, most women would prefer to avoid them all together. The best time to start prevention is as soon as you know youre pregnant, long before the skin needs to expand.

Its important to only use organic skin products while pregnant. Most chemicals are not proven safe for your unborn baby and its best to just avoid them. Going organic will give you peace of mind and youll be able to treat your skin without fear of affecting the child inside.

Organic skin products are just as effective against stretch marks, if not more so, than commercial, chemical laden ones. Youll find that natural ingredients work naturally with your skin to soothe it and soften it. Not only will you be preventing stretch marks, youll also be promoting softer, more hydrated skin.

What to Look for in Stretch Mark Prevention Treatments

Certain organic products work better than others against stretch marks. Basically, you want to moisturize your skin and enhance the elasticity. A good prevention cream will also provide some healing power to help any existing tears in the skin heal faster, without getting worse. This is particularly helpful if you are starting treatment later in the pregnancy.

Organic stretch mark creams usually use one or more of the following ingredients:

Shea Butter: By far the most common ingredient used in stretch mark prevention since is one of the best natural moisturizers on the market. It also has healing properties to help with any existing stretch marks. Coconut Oil: A very good moisturizing oil that also enhances elasticity and hastens healing of existing problems.

Olive Oil: Another good moisturizer that helps boost elasticity and soften skin, making it more supple and resistant to tearing.

Any organic skin product designed to treat and prevent stretch marks should include one of the above ingredients for maximum benefit. Often they will have other natural ingredients, as well , to promote healing and enhance the moisturizing effect.

Busy parents are always on the lookout for natural, effective alternatives to support their children’s health and happiness. Invoking gentle calm in an otherwise hectic family life is especially appreciated. Essential oils can offer this support in a fun, safe and natural way. A few essential oils are particularly suitable for use with young ones, both for bringing soothing emotional calm and contentment healing the small wounds of childhood - here’s a quick primer to help you safely and effectively use five valuable essential oils with children.

There are three primary methods of using oils with little ones: Topical application through massage or applying directly to wounds or sores; Inhalation from a handkerchief, spray bottle, warm bowl of water, the bed sheets, or diffuser; and Baths, which actually combines the topical and inhalation methods. The main difference in using essential oils with children and adults is that children will simply need smaller amounts. There are a few oils that should not be used with children - peppermint, for example, is considered too powerful for the wee ones under two (spearmint is called for instead, which can be helpful with tummy trouble). Ask someone with experience or consult a reputable guidebook if you are unsure about a particular oil.

Also, the younger the child, the more dilute the concentration of essential oils should be in a formula, bath, or inhalation application. Massage formulas, for example, can contain approximately 1 drop essential oil per ounce of carrier oil for each year of age - this is flexible depending on the oil and the situation, within a range of 3 drops for each year (i.e. For children one and under, up to 4 drops can be used with gentle oils such as Vanilla, Lavender and Chamomile - use only 1 or two drops with newborns). The child’s weight can also be considered; if a child is larger for their age, a little more essential oil can be used. If using a diffuser, only enough oil so that the scent can be detected is necessary - nebulizing diffusers may output too high a concentration of oils for children; warming or humidifying diffusers are more appropriate. The oils we’ll look at here are all quite safe and can be used as often as feels appropriate; Tea Tree, though, should be reserved just for its potent antiseptic applications.

So what are these few important essential oils we’ve alluded to? We’ll start with Vanilla…Mmmm, everyone loves vanilla, right? It turns out that babies especially respond well to the comforting sweet aroma. While a good vanilla essential oil is a little expensive, only a very small amount is needed to create an exceptionally soothing massage oil for belly, back and foot rubs. Vanilla, being so gentle, can be used in concentrations of up to 1% (that’s 10 drops per ounce of carrier). Really all that’s needed is a hint of the aroma for it to work wonders. I’ve received reports of children being instantly calmed by a gentle vanilla massage, then immediately asking for more!

Next up is Chamomile. Roman Chamomile is premier oil calming little ones over two years of age. The oil may be used in a number of ways; aromatherapy massage, in a diffuser or room spray (with this and other oils, dilute 10 drops per cup of water in a clean spray bottle - shake well and lightly mist the air), a drop or two sprinkled on bedding, or in a bath. According to Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt in Advanced Aromatherapy, “Even in very small concentrations, whether alone or in combinations with other oils (Roman Chamomile) has a soothing effect. It’s appropriate to massage a few undiluted drops into the solar plexus.” It is noted as particularly suited to calming tantrums or bringing calm after nightmares.

Lavender essential oil is also highly regarded for its soothing qualities, along with a host of other healing actions. Lavender oil has been called ‘a medicine chest in a bottle’, as it is anti-inflammatory (good for small burns - apply directly as needed), relieves pain and supports wound healing. Clinical studies have proven Lavender oil’s effectiveness for improving sleep. For children, blend 2 to 1 with Roman Chamomile. Apply one drop of this blend to the pillow at nap or night time. Lavender works well in a bath, too. Additionally, Lavender can be mixed in equal parts with Tea Tree oil to add a soothing quality to Tea Tree’s antiseptic action. Really, every parent should have a bottle of Lavender on hand.

When sour moods are in need of a lift, citrus oils supply the aromas of choice. Tangerine and Sweet Orange are especially liked, and Mandarin has a certain calming effect not found in any other oil. Citrus oils are often cold-pressed from the peels of the fruit; these can be mildly irritating to the skin. Stick to using these in room sprays or diffusers. Steam distilled citrus oils, often made from the leaves or flowers of the citrus trees (like Neroli, Petitgrain, or Mandarin Petitgrain - an especially nice oil for young ones) can safely be used in topical applications like massages and baths. All these oils are known as antidepressants, and might just lift your mood as well as your child’s (not to terrible of a side effect!)

Finally, there’s Tea Tree essential oil. Tea Tree is considered a universal antiseptic, replacing that stinging Iodine solution that grandmother always seemed to have on hand. Tea Tree oil can still be a little strong for the younger ones if applied directly; blend with Lavender as noted above for these cases. A few drops of the Tea Tree and Lavender blend can be added to a warm bowl of water for an effective, soothing wash for cuts and scrapes. Also, a natural antiseptic spray can be mixed and used as needed. Use two ounce of pure water and one half ounce of rubbing alcohol. To this, add 8 drops each of Chamomile and Lavender, plus 12 drops Tea Tree; shake before each use. Tea Tree has a great many additional uses, and like Lavender, is useful to always keep on hand.

This is just a start at incorporating the magic of essential oils into your children’s lives. Safe, natural and effective means of supporting their health and wellness is always welcome. There are a great many more oils, many with profound healing effects. Particularly with children, start slowly - your nose might tell you when you’ve had just the right amount of aromatherapy, but children may not be able to express this. And where one child may not respond particularly to a certain oil, another will be entranced by the same aroma. There are many wonderful books available for the beginning aromatherapist with oodles of oil descriptions and recipes. Experiment, be creative and have fun!

Scent is a powerful thing. It has the ability to bring back memories from the ancient past and revive people that you haven`t seen in decades, just with a single whiff. Because of this, aromatherapy is something that has become very useful as a therapeutic aide.

Many people are aware that simple things like the smell of lemon smells clean and peppermint is often an aroma that reminds us of freshness and energy. But the actual amount of aromatherapy options out there can be overwhelming and there are quite a few things that those not steeped in knowledge of aromatherapy may not be aware of.

Some Oils Are Dangerous

Did you know that aromatherapy shouldn`t be used with all organic essential oils? Some oils are actually toxic and this may not be noted by the seller. Essential oils such as wormwood, camphor and rue are actually bad for you and shouldn`t ever be applied to the skin. It`s always good to know which oils shouldn`t be used in aromatherapy.

Other toxic herbs that shouldn`t be used with aromatherapy include wintergreen, sweet birth, Spanish broom, arnica, pennyroyal, onion, garlic and bitter almond. You may wish to talk to a professional before starting in on any aromatherapy work, just to be sure you know which oils are safe and which shouldn`t be used.

Aromatherapy Isn`t Just Mental

A common misconception is that aromatherapy is only a way to help your state of mind. It`s far more than that, though and you`ll find that some of the simplest smells can actually have a physical effect on your body, especially when applied to the skin. It`s important not to apply pure essential oil directly to the skin, you`ll need a carrier oil, first so it won`t burn you.

Drops of lavender oil on a pillow can induce sleep and a massage with peppermint is great for stimulating blood flow and waking you up. These herbs have physical effects, not just emotional or mental ones. Tea tree oil is perhaps one of the best known essential oils and is commonly used to heal all manner of maladies by simply applying it to the affected area.

The Methods of Aromatherapy

The great thing about aromatherapy is that if you don`t enjoy massage or prefer not to use a specific method of diffusing the smell, there are always other options.

Massage with an essential oil in a carrier oil can be very invigorating or relaxing, depending on the smells chosen. Diffusers are some of the most common methods of spreading the scent and consist of a heater (often a candle) and a container for the oil. Sometimes the oil is added to wax chips that release the scent as they melt. There are also aromatherapy candles on the market and sprays. You can also add a couple of drops of essential oil to a sink or tub of hot water or even onto a handkerchief or cloth to tuck inside your pillowcase or pocket.

Aromatherapy is a very useful way to treat problems or to enhance a state of mind. If you find that you are drowsy in the morning when you need to get ready for work, it can be a great idea to have a diffuser ready to go with an invigorating aroma. Likewise, a soothing one at bedtime eases the transition from being wide awake to sleep and has been used by insomniacs for hundreds of years now. Aromatherapy is a great way to connect with your family, as well, using their sense of smell to draw them in!

by Olivia Roberts

The resin of the Olibanum tree, known as Frankincense, has been regarded with the highest esteem by the world’s most advanced cultures for many thousands of years. What is it about these little pearls of tree sap that were once valued as highly as gold, sought after by kings, and given as a birth gift to one of history’s most revered prophets?

The name is derived from the medieval French ‘franc’, meaning ‘pure’ or ‘free’, and from the Latin ‘incensium’, meaning ‘to smoke’. The Frankincense tree itself bears the appearance of a rugged survivor, with many knurled branches topped with abundant slim leaves. It is native to the deserts of North Africa, growing in some of the world’s harshest environments. It is not the tree itself, however, but rather its sap that is so greatly sought after. Similar to many evergreen trees, when pierced, the tree ‘bleeds’ a milky sap. The resin forms droplets known as pearls, which are dried in the sun to form hardened incense gum known itself as Frankincense.

For more than 5000 years, the hardened resin has been burned in temples throughout Egypt, China and India; the Catholic church continues to use it today during Mass. It is one of the four main ingredients in Jewish ceremonial incense, forming an important part of the Sabbath day offerings. The smoke of Frankincense, as with other ritual incense, is thought to carry prayers to heaven upon it’s smoke. It is also said to deepen the breath and still the mind, making it useful for meditation and yogic practice. Some components of Frankincense stimulate the pineal gland, or ‘third-eye’, so this concept makes sense under modern scientific investigation. The incense may have health benefits as well, producing a highly antiseptic smoke, keeping churches and churchgoers free from disease.

Frankincense resin is thought to have a bounty of health properties - it was an ingredient in a rejuvenating face mask in ancient Egypt (it was also charred and used as the classic heavy eyeliner seen in much ancient Egyptian art), and at one time was “used to treat every conceivable ill to man”. In Ayurvedic medicine it is known as salaiguggul, used for centuries to treat many conditions, including arthritis. Modern science has isolated the active compounds found to have anti-arthritic properties. Called boswellic acids, these components inhibit the inflammatory process, improve blood supply and prevent further cartilage reduction.

Today’s naturopathic physicians continue the use of Frankincense essential oil for certain conditions. The oil is distilled directly from the collected tree resin. It is used for respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, catarrh and asthma; for wrinkles, wounds and dry skin, and in cases of rheumatism, cystitis and leucorrhea. It may be utilized through any of the routes of aromatherapy administraion: inhalation, topical application, or ingestion (though this route should only be undertaken with the direct advice of a qualified practitioner!) Further, Frankincense oil is currently being investigated in unversity studies for anti-cancer effects. During a recent presentation before a regional meeting of the American Cancer Society in Roanoke, Va., Dr. John Robertson, director of the college’s Center for Comparative Oncology, said he’s found the oil has fairly selective anti-tumor activity and doesn’t appear to disrupt normal cells. The oil has been noted specifically for effects skin tumors and breast cancer, and may be particularly useful as an adjunct therapy in such cases because of it’s ease of application. Again, seek the advice of a qualified practitioner for details of usage in such cases.

It is important to note that the CO2 distillation (a cold-process method of pure essential oil extraction employing harmless carbon dioxide instead of steam) is more likely to contain the same healthful compounds as the resin, as the steam distilled variety may not be able to extract these ‘polar’ compounds. Kurt Schnaubelt, America’s leading medical aromatherapist notes, regarding the production of essential oil from the resin, “It could be that the (health-related) substances in question are too polar and too large a molecular size to appear in steam distillates - their presence would be more likely in CO2 extracts.”

The most noted effect of the essential oil may be on the nervous system. Regarded as an antidepressant, the aroma can both relax and revitalize, and can help in cases of nervous tension and exhaustion. Frankincense oil contains sesquiterpenes, which stimulate the limbic system, the hypothalamus, the pineal and the pituitary glands. The oil is now being researched for its ability to increase human growth hormone production. Further, it is considered to strengthen the immune system, which may in-fact occur as a result of its uplifting properties. The oil is noted in most aromatherapy guides to uplift the spirit, calm the mind, and act as an anti-depressant.

Frankincense essential oil can be used in a manner similar to burning of the incense in spiritual practice. Warming in a candle lamp or direct application to the temples and third eye will quiet the mind, deepen the breath, and promote meditative stillness. It is often blended with Sandalwood, Myrrh and Cedarwood for such uses, and the single-pointed concentration it invokes is thought to allow the spirit to soar. For medicinal purposes, some naturopathic practitioners take 1-3 drops of the essential oil orally on a daily basis, in addition to massaging into any diseased area. Of course, as with any illness, it is important to seek out qualified medical advice; if you choose to employ Frankincense oil, discuss this with your physician - it should be acceptable as an adjunct therapy in most cases.

For use as a simple incense, the resin itself is inexpensive and widely available. The small ‘pearls’ may bit lit, and will release their pleasant smoke as any other incense. The experience of pure Frankincense is unique, and is worth trying for yourself.

For aromatic use of the essential oil, a diffuser or warming lamp can be used to disperse the aroma throughout a space. The oil is also found in aromatherapy candles, where it is released from the heated oil beneath the burning wick. Frankincense oil can be applied directly to the forehead where you can both capture the aroma and absorb the oil directly.

The wonderful gift of the Frankincense tree is available in many ways, and has come highly recommended for many thousands of years. Try adding a little Frankincense to your life, and see what the mystery is all about!

People who would like a natural and side effect free treatment should look into aromatherapy treatment. It can treat anything from cuts and scraps to colds. There are also studies that aromatherapy might help to treat Alzhemier’s Disease.

You can get great aromatherapy benefits in a variety of different ways. Many people choose to use an aromatherapy diffuser, a traditional method. It allows you to inhale the essential oils, so that they can reach your limbic system

Which Diffuser Should I Choose?

It can be a hard choice when looking for a diffuser, because there are many different types to choose from. Your first question is how you would like to use it. Is it only for you, or for your car or office?

If you are looking to buy several diffusers, or want them to remain hidden, try a tea light diffuser. It looks like a normal candle, and is very easy to use. They are also inexpensive, which means several oils can be used at once.

Where Can I Buy a Diffuser?

When you are ready to buy your diffuser, there are a few simple options. A local eastern meditation or wellness store may have what you’re looking for. There are many different options on the internet as well.

When you find your favorite essential oil, you may use it every day. Beware, however, that this will cause you to become accustomed to its scent. You will still gain benefits from it, but won’t be able to smell it as clearly.

What is aromatherapy, you may ask? First of all, it has been used for thousands of years. In it, essential oils are distilled from such things as plants, flowers and grasses. These oils are then used to treat different illnesses.

There are several different ways to use aromatherapy. The most common, as the name implies, is through the inhalation of diffused essential oils. They are then able to affect your limbic system, which is responsible for emotion.

Many conditions can be alleviated though the use of aromatherapy. Some of these include anxiety, psoriasis, acne and insomnia. Another benefit of aromatherapy is that it is completely safe, and there are no side effects.

Once you have decided that aromatherapy is right for you, it can be a little bit intimidating to get started. But some simple research can help you to find which aromatherapy accessories will suit you best.

What do Aromatherapy Accessories Do?

What should your first aromatherapy accessory purchase be? A diffuser should be the first item on your list. This will diffuse elements from the essential oils so that you can inhale them and be affected by them.

If you are concerned about protecting your essential oils from damage caused by sun and temperature changes where they’re stored, look into an essential oil storage box. These containers will keep your oils protected and organized.

For someone who is serious about aromatherapy, there are also many books and guides that are great for learning more about which essential oils will be best for you. Aromatherapy accessories can help you to gain the most benefits possible.

As the interest in aromatherapy grows for those interested in alternative health, wellness, and fitness, many folks ask “what are essential oils” and “how do they differ from other oils like olive oil, coconut and the like”? This brief primer should help clarify the matter, and get you started in the wonderful world of aromatherapy. Essential oils are concentrated volatile aromatic compounds produced by plants - these are the easily evaporated essences that give plants their wonderful scents, more akin to an alcohol than what we commonly think of as an oil . Each of these complex precious liquids is extracted from a particular plant species. Each plant species originates in certain regions of the world, with particular environmental conditions and neighboring fauna and flora. The result is a very diverse library of aromatic compounds, with some essential oils being made up of more than one hundred distinct organic chemicals.

Pure essential oils are distilled from oil sacs found in most structures of plants - the leaves, roots, flowers and more. Almost all essential oils are made up of several, sometimes hundreds of various molecular compounds. The combination and ratios of these compounds give each oil it’s particular aromatic and medicinal properties. Essential oils are not just a by-product of plant growth; plants use these oils in a manner similar to those prescribed in medical aromatherapy: to fight infections from microbes, fungi and viruses; to protect themselves from animal invaders; and some suspect they may be used for chemical communication between plants of the same species. While essential oils come from the plant world, they are particularly suited to use in natural health, wellness and fitness programs as their chemistry is remarkably compatible with our own; they are easily absorbed into our bodies, even at the cellular level.

To produce essential oils of therapeutic quality - those that retain as much of the original plant essence in its original state as possible - the most gentle extraction method that will draw the oil from a particular plant is most desirable. Extraction methods range from Carbon Dioxide (CO2) extraction - being the most gentle (and most expensive), to pressing (as for extracting the oil from citrus rinds) and steam distillation, to solvent extraction. Steam distillation is most common, and as a result of only requiring heating to just above the boiling point of water, is considered gentle enough for most essential oils.

Humankind has used plants for healing for many thousands of years, and it’s from this tradition of that the use of aromatic plant compounds is medicine began. Documented use of aromatic plants dates back to near 4500 B.C., though it was in the hands of the ancient Egyptians that the use of oils and plant aromatics was truly developed. Oils were used in the embalming process, in medicine and in purification rituals. In 1922, when King Tut’s tomb was opened, 50 alabaster jars made to contain nearly 350 liters of oil were discovered. There are also over 200 references to aromatics, incense and ointments in the Old and New Testaments; Frankincense, Myrrh, Galbanun, Cinnamon, Cassia, Rosemary, Hyssop and Spikenard are noted for being used for anointing rituals and healing of the sick.

The first modern-day distillation of essential oil was performed by the Persian philosopher Avicenna (980-1037 A.D.) who extracted the essence of rose petals through the ‘enfleurage’ process. His discovery and subsequent use of a wonderful perfume substance eventually lead him to write a book on the healing properties of essential oil of Rose. By the mid 1500’s, many aromatic botanicals were being distilled in Europe and the Middle East. It was in the middle of the last century that the term ‘Aromatherapy’ was coined by French cosmetic chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse - Dr. Gattefosse discovered the healing properties of Lavender essential oil when, after burning his hands in a laboratory accident, he submersed them in the flower’s essential oil. His amazingly speedy recovery prompted him to write his book ‘Aromatherapy’ in 1937.

The most promising use of essential oils is in the treatment of infectious illness. Most essential oils display antibacterial effects, some also with strong antiviral properties as well. They can be used to fight infectious illness, or support the immune system to prevent the onset of illness in the first place. It does take a qualified practitioner, or a significantly strong knowledge to choose the right oil for each condition, however. Some oils are particularly effective in treating certain illnesses and not others; these ‘other’ illnesses will have their own best essential oil (or combination of) for treatment. Beyond infectious illness, certain essential oils have strong anti-inflammatory properties, other oils can stimulate the regeneration of tissues, others can help cleanse and purify the body, and still others can reduce muscular and joint pain while increasing circulation. As you can see, essential oils can play a significant role an any natural health, wellness and/or fitness program - the important part is proper education of the user.

Using essential oils is very easy, fun, and can be extremely rewarding. Employing oils is most commonly done using one of these methods: inhalation, topical application, and in certain instances ingestion. Diffusing essential oils with a cold-air nebulizer is best for inhalation, as these units make a fine mist of the oils which are easily absorbed in significant quantities. This method is effective both for psychological effects and support for the respiratory system. Topical application usually involved the dilution of essential oils in a carrier oil to a 5% or less concentration to be used with certain massage techniques. Massage is often used for relief of muscle and joint pain, and also with calming and uplifting psychological results. Topical application will frequently take the form of blends for healing various skin conditions such as eczema, acne, and even revitalizing aging skin. Finally, ingestion - which should only be done with very detailed knowledge from a qualified professional - is often used in the form of oil placed in gel capsules. Peppermint oil is frequently used this way for digestive complaints. There is such a wonderful variety of uses for essential oils; to get the most from them, educate yourself further through courses, texts and knowledgeable practitioners. Most of all, be safe, have fun, and welcome this new edition to your alternative natural health regimen.

A fantastic and mysterious relationship is continuously unfolding between plants and their surroundings. These organic green machines are ceaselessly performing a glorious alchemy with water, soil, air and sunlight. The nearly infinite possible combinations of plant genetics and environmental conditions on the face of the earth have allowed for an almost immeasurable diversity of alchemal floral expression, resulting in a vast array of natural botanical materials. These range from simple staple foodstuffs to gourmet fruits and vegetables, from rich exotic spices to effective medicinal herbs, and from enchanting natural perfumes to complex therapeutic essential oils. Mankind is reaching ever further into the jungles and rainforests, knowing that nature is the true master of creation in these fields.

The distinction in plants between food and medicine is blurred at best. Researchers regularly report new medicinal properties in plants once considered salad fixings, or even just weeds. Fruits and berries once thought supremely plain nourish us with some of the world’s most potent anti cancer agents. The same goes for common teas and spices; green tea is arguably the most effective anti oxidants known. The Indian spice Turmeric has fantastic anti-inflammatory properties…and this list continues to grow. This lack of distinction also exists between natural fragrances and therapeutic essential oils. The oil of Lavender flowers, rich in ketones, does triple duty as a perfume, an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agent, and calming aromatic that can help ease tension and allow restful sleep.

The use of alternative therapies continues to grow. More and more people are looking to the wisdom of nature for support for many ailments, both somatic and psychological. Interestingly, the cause of much illness, from a natural healing viewpoint, is a state out-of-tune with nature. The further we stray in our diets and lifestyles from natural ways an means, the more out-of-balance we find ourselves. Lack of balance with the earth, the material source of our physical beings, leads to ‘dis-ease’. But help to find balance once again is all around us - because plants have created their fantastic botanical materials in processes guided by the rhythms of the earth, we can turn to plant wisdom to again find our way.

A depressed emotional state is a common reasons for using complementary and alternative therapies today. A wide range of psychological, physical, and energetic issues can lead to feelings of depression and a pervasive outlook of negativity. Moreover, once in a state of depression, patterns can arise that make relief all the more difficult to find. The use of essential oils for uplifting the psyche and spirit is becoming more widespread because of the oils’ broad and dramatic effects. While the oils themselves may not directly affect the underlying cause of depression, they may help individuals break free from depressive cycles - they may provide the impetus to ‘get off the couch’, so to speak, and begin creating long lasting change. Many natural healers believe depression to be a result of, like many other ills, of being out of balance; being unable to ’synch up’ with the natural state of harmony that permeates the universe. For relieving this is-harmony, aromatherapy can be a very powerful means to infuse one’s body and mind with the most concentrated, sublime botanicals nature has to offer.

In humans, the olfactory (sense of smell) region is an area of about 2 and a half square centimeters, and is located in each of the two nasal cavities between and below the eyes. Containing approximately fifty million primary sensory receptor cells, this region is highly intricate, being 10,000 times more perceptive than the sense of taste. When compared to sight, we find that olfaction is more complex - it is able to distinguish a nearly infinite number of element compounds at very low concentrations. In order to perceive the visible spectrum, humans use only three types of photoreceptors; in contrast, the sense of smell relies on several hundred distinct classes of receptors.

Essential oils stimulate multiple regions in the human brain, including those controlling our hormonal and emotional reactions. Aromatic oils have direct and profound effects on our innermost control systems which balance our feelings and mental states. When inhaled, aromatherapy oils passing through the outer layers of the sinuses and activate the olfactory nerves. There, the brain is directly stimulated, producing powerful systemic effects, with the most immediate being on the emotions.

In both Naturopathy and Ayurvedic Medicine (The Science of Life), essential oils are considered to enhance the flow of prana (essential life force), enhance and nourish ojas (sustaining energy and immunological essence), and brighten tejas (clarity and mental luminosity). In Traditional Chinese Medicine, essential oils in general are medicines for the Shen, the spiritual essence that resides in the heart and guides and governs consciousness. Used consciously, essential oils powerfully enhance positive mental and emotional states.

Further, the medicinal properties of essential oils, through their ability to support physiological healing, can also be of great benefit to the heart and mind. A Korean study on the effect of aromatherapy on pain in patients with arthritis found that receiving massage with lavender, marjoram, eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint oils significantly decreased both the pain AND mental depression levels.

Following are some oils that have a reputation for up-lifting Shen, enhancing prana, nourishing ojas, and brightening tejas - combinations that may have marked effects on symptoms of depression. These oils can be used alone or in combination in a nebulizing diffuser (producing a fine mist of oils for inhalation), or in aromatherapy massage, thereby inhaled and absorbed through the skin concurrently.

Bergamot (pressed from the peels of bitter oranges) has a strong reputation for its ability to gently uplift. In terms of Chinese medicine, this is a direct result of its smoothing the flow of Liver-Qi (’Chi’ or Life Force), the liver being thought of as the seat of the eternal soul. Bergamot combines the ability to both relax the nerves and refresh the Spirit; it is suitable for many types of depressive states.

Neroli (from the flower of bitter oranges), like Bergamot, regulates the Qi - and like Jasmine flower oil, comforts the mind and heart. Neroli is called for at a core level, for the type of depression that comes from nervous and emotional exhaustion. Neroli uplifts the mind and Spirit with its potential to nourish and unify. Neroli assists in retrieving and releasing repressed emotions, with potential to nourish and unify a fragmented psyche. Neroli is specifically indicated for individuals who, in order to escape from emotional pain and suffering, cut themselves off from their feelings and senses.

The Chamomiles (German and Roman) are wonderful oils to use when the depression manifests in a moody, irritable, dissatisfied outward expression associated with stagnant Liver-Qi. These flower oils are earthy, rich, and grounding with subtle uplifting qualities.

When depression is of a Fire (overly aggressive) nature, it often involves an imbalance of joy and love - the root emotions of the heart and mind. Joy is an extension of Shen’s (spiritual essence’s) innate sense of harmony and perfection, an experience of emotional and spiritual well-being. The depression that afflicts the heart and Shen involves a loss of one’s natural sense of joy. There is often an accompanied lack of enthusiasm and interest as well as an inability to become inspired. Rose otto - steam distilled rose essential oil - or Rose Absolute may have a profound effect on this state. Rose is thought the premier heart opening aromatic, bringing joy, uplifting and restoring balance.

What follows are a few recipes for uplifting and releasing depressed emotional states - use your intuition to find the right one. Often, the single essential oil or blend you find most attractive will be the one that serves you best. Experiment, explore, and have fun with these fantastic gifts of nature. These blends may be used in a diffuser or candle lamp, unless where a carrier oil is indicated - blends with carriers are intended specifically for aromatherapy massage (self-massage is very effective, as well as a simple massage from a friend or loved one).

For opening the heart:1 part Rose 3 parts Sandalwood 1 part Sweet Orange or Bergamot3 parts Jasmine 1 part Ylang Ylang 1 part Sandalwood. For brightening, refreshing and uplifting:3 parts Bergamot 1 part Ylang Ylang 1 part Grapefruit2 parts Bergamot 2 parts Clary Sage 1 part Frankincense3 parts Bergamot or Sweet Orange 2 parts Clary Sage2 parts Frankincense 1 part Lemon 1 part either Jasmine or Neroli. For nourishing:1 part (Roman) Chamomile 1 part Vanilla 10 parts carrier oil of choice. If you like floral and earthy (uplifting and softening to Spirit):1 part Neroli 1 part Vanilla 1 part Orange or 1 part Sandalwood1 part Chamomile 1 part Bergamot 1 part Helichrysum.

If single oils are your preference, the following oils should be investigated - For depression associated with negativity: Bergamot, Chamomile, Helichrysum, Neroli, Sweet Orange, Spikenard and Yarrow. Associated with lack of joy: Rose, Jasmine, Coriander, Melissa, Patchouli, Rosemary and Ylang Ylang. Associated with ‘overthinking’: Cardamom, Frankincense, Lemon, Marjoram, Myrrh and Vetiver. For pessimism, regret and remorse, try: Clary Sage, Cypress, Hyssop, Pine and Tea Tree. For doubt of one’s capacity to cope with overwhelming situations, try: Cypress, Geranium, Ginger, Jumpier or Thyme.

While aromatherapy can provide support in many cases, it may not be for everyone. Seek professional assistance in any case where one is losing the will to live, or any other seemingly impossible situation. Aromatherapy can be used in concurrently with other treatments, though one should consult their care giver to ensure there are no contraindications with any prescribed medication.

Many of the usual discomforts can be easily addressed by natural aromatherapy. The nose has nerve endings which are stimulated to bring the body and mind together. Many products like candles and soaps are able to be used for simple every day aromatherapy. When your ready to go to the next level, all of the benefits of applying essential oils can easily be learned in order to get as much as possible from the aromatherapy experience.

The oils used in the Aromatherapy Massage will vary based on individual needs and allergies. Typically, essential oils are made when you use a steam distillation method. This captures the smell and essence of the plant being used. Some oils can be made by using any number of the fallowing parts; petals, roots, leafs, buds, reigns, fruits, or bark. Of these oils, there are a couple oils that can be made using any part of the plant that is above ground. All these oils are expertly mixed within a base oil.

Aromatherapy, when done by massage, can be done in different methods. One which will be particularly helpful for mental and emotional well being is massaging the oils directly into the points used in acupressure, and only takes a little time reading up to learn how to do.

Oils work in a duel layer method. They can enter the body threw breathing, which carries the memories that a person associates with a given plant or smell. The second method that carries the properties of the oil is by it being pushed down into the skin, the oils are pushed closer to the capillaries and took through the blood.

Always make sure you have a certain amount of privacy and comfort before any attempt to try the aromatherapy technique on yourself. Soaking in a scented bath can be a relaxing precursor to a self massage using essential oils. A locked bathroom can be the ticket to be able to continue the relaxation of your bath into your massage time. Be sure to give yourself the time to properly rub the scented oil wherever it’s effects are needed. Getting into the deeper skin layers can help to circulate oxygen through the exact area you need the essential oils to work in.

One way to assure that you get the time you need is to make an appointment with a professional for an aromatherapy massage. With today’s hectic schedules, it is hard to find time at home without interruptions. Many spas that offer these massages will let you choose one of their own oil blends, or let you bring your own.

Getting the most from your experience is what’s most important, whether the aromatherapy is self administered, or if you choose to seek out a spa. Being able to feel comfortable in a private setting is the key to getting all of the emotional benefits, as well as physical.

Any number of oils can be used in an aromatherapy massage, but you will want to know if you have any natural allergies to a given plant and let the masseuse know before hand. If you have none then you will want to choose smells that relax and remind you of pleasant things.

One of the first things a person is likely to notice about you is your hair and if you have a condition like alopecia, you just might rather hide behind a hat or scarf instead. Alopecia is a condition in which your hair falls out and there is no rhyme or reason as to why it happens. There are many remedies to be found on the internet and even drugstores but you might want to try an alternative treatment such as the use of an alopecia aromatherapy recipe.

Hair Loss Issues

Hair loss can result from a number of health conditions such as hormone imbalances, lack of proper nutrition, lack of proper hair care and even stress. These conditions, when not resulting in alopecia, are often treated with essential oils used in aromatherapy. Therefore, it stands to reason that an alopecia aromatherapy recipe could be created to directly combat the result of the stress, hormone imbalance or lack of proper nutrition.

Essential oils have special properties which have been used for thousands of years to treat common ailments which are why many people believe in the healing power of a real alopecia aromatherapy recipe. Stress is often calmed with chamomile, clary sage and ylang ylang so it stands to reason that is would work well in the hair care recipe. Thyme and rosemary are calming and therefore may work well in an alopecia aromatherapy recipe, particularly if one of the problems is hormone imbalances.

Mixing It Up

When it is time to mix up your alopecia aromatherapy recipe, you cannot use any essential oils directly onto your scalp. Rather, you must blend them with carrier oil as most essential oils should not be used straight onto skin. A few carrier oils that would work wonders with any essential oils are coconut oil, almond oil or even olive oil.

Most alopecia aromatherapy recipes should be mixed in a container which could serve also as the applicator like a spray or squeeze bottle. This allows for less mess as well as a way to apply the aromatherapy treatment directly onto the scalp without making a mess. Besides, you have to be careful when mixing and applying the essential oil mixtures as it can stain clothing and certain surfaces.

Starting with a your bottle dispenser, pour about two ounces of the carrier oil of your choice along with 5 drops of ylang ylang, thyme and rosemary. With two drops of lavender, thyme, chamomile, cedar wood and clay sage, your alopecia aromatherapy recipe is complete. The next step is to thoroughly mix the different essential oils together with the carrier oil and then test it on an inconspicuous spot on your skin to ensure no major breakouts occur.

The best way to use your alopecia aromatherapy recipe is to massage a few drops onto your scalp which will likely stimulate the hair roots and hopefully kick start new hair growth. Because there are quite a few essential oils in the world, you should research a few others to see what their medicinal properties are and whether they would work.

The practice of aromatherapy is one which is widely known now, and for good reason. It is an herbal type of medicine, one which largely incorporates the use of essential oils from plants, trees, and flowers. It consists of the use of these pure essential oils which have been steam distilled from their originating plants and it can help relieve a wide assortment of ailments and illnesses.

There are hundreds of different essential oils which may be used here, and each of the oils has its own different healing properties. Some of these oils work by calming the patient while others are meant to energize and revitalize.

It has proven to be effective for treating aches and pains, injuries, even serious diseases, and without the uncomfortable and annoying side effects and symptoms which are so often associated with more conventional methods of treatment.

What it Can do For You

Aromatherapy can be incredibly effective and because it is much safer to use than more conventional treatment methods, it is a great alternative for those people who are looking for a more natural treatment.

Aromatherapy can be used for everything from acne, chapped skin and lips, insect bites, athletes foot, bronchitis, sore throats, headaches, and it is even now being used to treat Alzheimers Disease patients.

Getting Started

If you are interested in incorporating aromatherapy into your own life, there are a few steps you should take. The first is to become more educated about aromatherapy in general, as the history of this practice goes back thousands of years and aromatic plants and essential oils were actually used as far back as biblical times.

The next step is to understand about the different ways in which this practice can be implemented, namely aromatherapy massage. This is an incredibly unique type of massage, one that uses essential oils to relax and soothe the patient. When you inhale these oils there are messages which are transmitted to your limbic system and as a result this affects your heart rate, stress level, and blood pressure.

People who receive an aromatherapy massage report feeling a great deal more relaxed and at ease, and not only does this make them feel better in general but it also helps the actual massage portion of the treatment to be more effective. It is especially great for treating sports injuries which can often be quite serious, not only physically but mentally as well.

The history of aromatherapy goes back thousands of years, as far back as biblical times. In the most basic terms it is the systematic use of volatile plant oils which are known as essential oils. These oils are natural substances which are extracted from grasses, flowers, herbs, trees, and resins.

Aromatherapy is used in a wide range of settings and to treat a variety of different conditions. Aromatherapy is most often implemented through inhalation although the oils and herbs can also be taken orally. The smells of these oils are believed to work by stimulating positive emotions through the limbic system which is the area of the brain that is responsible for memories and emotions.

Just a few of the most common uses for aromatherapy include alopecia areata, agitation, insomnia, anxiety, constipation, and psoriasis. One of the most positive aspects of aromatherapy is that, unlike most of the more conventional methods of treatment, it is generally considered as being safe and as well does not come with any symptoms and side effects.

If you are interested in aromatherapy and in incorporating it into your own life then one of the first things you are going to need to do is get the right aromatherapy accessories.

Aromatherapy Accessories

There are many different aromatherapy accessories that you can purchase, a diffuser being one of the most important. A diffuser is used to help disperse the molecules of the essential oils used into the air, and in turn this enables the body to use them more effectively. There are several different styles of these particular aromatherapy accessories available, atomizers being one.

These diffusers use a small pump and specialized glass to disperse the molecules into the air in a fine mist, but there are also other diffusers which are require you to place a few drops of oil on the surface, from which they will begin to slowly disperse on the surface.

Aromatherapy storage boxes are also very popular aromatherapy accessories, and offer you a simple and stylish manner to store your essential oils and aromatherapy candles. This is especially important because aromatherapy oils are very susceptible to deterioration that is caused by both sunlight and changes in ambient temperature.

There are also various books and publications that are useful with the practice of aromatherapy, and which are available worldwide.

These aromatherapy accessories can help you to make the most of your aromatherapy experiences, by helping keep your items safe and organized.

For thousands of years, the use of essential oils in aromatherapy has been used for a variety of ailments and injuries such as nausea, cuts, bruising, anxiety and more. Aromatherapy benefits are just now being truly studied through various scientific practices to see just how those essential oils truly work.

Defining Essential Oils

Essential oils are often concentrated and therefore should never be used without diluting it with carrier oil, particularly if the essential oil is meant for the skin. The aromatherapy benefits from the use of these essential oils are produced by chemical reactions and absorption through the body. Mixed with carrier oils, essential oils are absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream while others are inhaled and trigger a brain response.

Each essential oil is usually derived from various plants, trees and other living things with each having its own properties and should thereby be directed towards particular functions. For instance, lavender is a popular herb which is turned into essential oils to calm the senses and even calm the digestive system, depending on how it is used. The aromatherapy benefits of lavender stretch far and wide and this herb is used in massage oils, sachets, bubble bath and even stomach remedies.

Taking Precautions

While the aromatherapy benefits are many, you have to take care in how you conduct treatments because some essential oils cannot be use without carrier oils and some may even trigger adverse reactions with existing medications you may be taking. Before trying any aromatherapy treatments, always ask your doctor about possible reactions, especially if you are being treated for a pre-existing condition.

Studying up on the essential oils and their various aromatherapy benefits, you will discover that there is a plethora of information on the subject. Some essential oils used can multi-task and offer more than one type of benefit while others have one use only. One of the more versatile essential oils is peppermint because it can be inhaled, used topically and with proper care, ingested as well. Inhaling the aroma of peppermint wakes up the brain and provides alertness and using it topically will reduce fatigue in tired muscles.

Acne, psoriasis, colds, flu, lymphatic drainage, cuts, bruising, nausea and sore muscles are just a few of many conditions that can reap the aromatherapy benefits that come from using essential oils. Emotional and physical well-being can be achieved with essential oils and while there may not be definitive proof with some of them, as long as you feel better after using them that is all that counts. After all, people for thousands of years, especially the ancient Romans and Egyptians reaped aromatherapy benefits through the use of essential oils.

There’s nothing wrong with buying commercially made aromatherapy body lotions. Just be sure you can use it all up before it goes off. And you need to know how strong the scent is. If it is too strong, then you’ll need to either use a very small amount or blend it with an unscented baby body lotion. If you do not have any aromatherapy oils about, then you will have no choice but to go for ready made aromatherapy body lotions.

What To Do With Those Oils?

But if you do have one or more bottles of aromatherapy essential oils, then you want to get your money’s worth by using them in as many pleasant ways as you can think of. One of the easiest ways to make the most of expensive essential oils is to make small batches of aromatherapy body lotion. You usually wind up spending less than getting commercially made aromatherapy body lotions.

Let’s Stink In A Pretty Way

You need to know whether your essential oil is pure or diluted. You can use either one in making aromatherapy body lotions, but you will need a lot more of the diluted oils. You also need a base unscented body lotion. Believe it or not, they still sell this in drug stores and sometimes department stores. Ideally, you want a lotion very much like a baby lotion usually white and creamy.

All you need to do is take a small handful of the lotion and pour in a couple of drops of your chosen aromatherapy oil. You can mix oils if you want to. However, dont have more than 10% of your aromatherapy body lotion be oil. That will be too strong and can make you itch.

Also, please do some research on the aromatherapy oil you have. Know what this oil is supposed to do to you. If you want to seduce a man, wearing marjoram aromatherapy body lotion is a big no-no. Why? Because marjoram, despite it’s spicy scent, is a proven anaphropdisiac (which is the exact opposite of an aphrodisiac).

Test Patch

Before you slather your entire body with your home-made aromatherapy body lotion, you should do a test patch first. Make the tiniest little bit and apply it to your elbows, arms or a part of your limb that you can easily put medicine on in case something goes wrong. Leave it on for 24 hours, even after it is completely absorbed by the skin. Ideally, nothing bad should happen to that patch in the next 24 hours.
